The images are original artwork, not actual scanned phone-cards.

The awa card was issued in June 1997 in an edition of 210.000 cards. In January 1998 the second issue consisted of 80.000 cards. The Biento card was issued in May 1997 in a edition of 310.000 cards with another issue in January 1998 of 80.000 cards. The Solo card has been issued in October 1997, in the amount of 50.000 cards. The same number of cards were re-issued in January 1998.
All the second editions have a smaller chip and a glossier surface than the first.

I shot a lot of photographs for the phonecard assignment with the elements-theme. Because I could select only three pictures for the phonecards, I decided to have a small exposition in Setar Headquarters. The Water/Wind/Sun expo consisting of twelve photographs opened in March 1998.

I'm also participating in the Millenium Photo Project.
"The basic premise is to encourage photographers from around the world to take pictures on New Year's Eve 1999 and submit copies of those pictures to the Millennium Photo Project office. An international panel of judges will then select the best 300 pictures for inclusion in a high-quality coffee-table type book......"

Discovery Channel Online
In february 1998 Discovery Channel Online hired me to shoot pictures for their daily web-dispatch Chasing the Eclipse by Hannah Holmes. This was an expedition to Aruba to witness the preparations for the total solar eclipse on February 26 1998 (my birthday, by the way). Unfortunately, these pictures are no longer online for viewing.

The Macho & The Virgin is a documentary project about how men and women play their respective roles within the "machismo"-coloured society of Aruba and Curaçao. The photographs were taken during the carnival period of 1993 and were part of my graduation project. In August 1993 the 40 photographs were on exhibit at Instituto di Cultura in Oranjestad, Aruba.

The Dawning of Age is a series of twelve photographs of the desolate Aruba north-shore, capturing the timeless mood of the area. This project was made possible by a grant from UNOCA and the work was exhibited at Art Gallery and restaurant Gasparito in 1990.

The Decisive Moment:

The Decisive Moment is a thesis on the relation between photography, reality and manipulation of truth. In addition the work contains 10 images on the subject, of which 3 photographic computer-manipulations are shown in this site. I've deconstructed photographic reality by using computer-imaging techniques to question the "truth" of what we see and of what we don't see. The title is taken from the quote after Fred Ritchin:
"The 'decisive moment', as defined by Cartier-Bresson, nowadays doesn't have to refer to the moment the photograph was taken, but can refer to the moment the image was modified."

Biography Nadine Salas
Nadine Salas was born on 26/02/68 on Aruba.
She graduated in 1993 from the Rotterdam Academy of Art, majoring in photography and interaction design. She currently works as a freelance photographer and internet designer. She has organized numerous exhibitions of her own photographs, on Aruba as well in the Netherlands.

In 1998 Discovery Channel Online hired her to shoot pictures for their daily web-dispatch 'Chasing the Eclipse' by Hannah Holmes. This was an expedition to Aruba to witness the preparations for the total eclipse of February 26 1998.

In 1996 she designed the new series of phone-cards for Aruba's national telephone-company, Setar. The AWA/BIENTO/SOLO series, meaning water/wind/sun. For these cards she photographed dancers who symbolically express the elements that shape the Aruban landscape.

In 1996, together with Renwick Heronimo, she organized an exhibition for Aruban art students currently enrolled in college, "Simiya ' 96". Simiya is papiamento for "seed". The objective of this exhibition was to provide the students with the experience of having their work on display and to encourage the contact between the public and the young artists. The exhibit will be held every two years so the public can witness the artist's development over time. Students can participate when, at the time of the exposition, they are enrolled for at least one year in college. Their last participation includes the presentation of their graduation work. The first Simiya proved to be very succesful.

In august 1995 she exhibited her documentary work "The Macho & The Virgin" on Curaçao at the Akademia di Arte in Otrobanda.

She was one of the 10 Dutch photographers selected by the NFI to participate in the project called"Inside-Out" by the NFI organised for the "Photo International Rotterdam" manifestation in november 1994.

In April 1994 she was part of a three artist-exhibit in Museum Hillesluis in South Rotterdam.

In August 1993 her solo exhibition called "The Macho & The Virgin" opened at the Instituto di Cultura at Oranjestad on Aruba. This documentary about the man-woman relationships on Aruba and Curaçao was made possible by a grant of the UNOCA.

In August of 1991 she had a exhibition called "Sun & Shadows" in the National library of Aruba, which was made possible by a grant of the UNOCA. The work was about the flip-side of the Aruban culture.

In August 1990 she diplayed her work in Art Gallery and restaurant Gasparito on Aruba. The project was called "The dawning of age" and consisted of photographs of the desolate northcoast landscapes of Aruba and was made possible by a grant of the UNOCA.

In Februari 1990 her work was on display in Art Gallery Artishock in Oranjestad, Aruba.

In August 1988 she had her first foto-exhibition in the National library of Aruba in Oranjestad.
